Community Rating System Program
Saves Alameda County Residents
The Alameda County Flood Control District (District), began participating in the Community Rating System Program (CRS) in 1992. This program provides credit points to the District for many different activities which provide for better floodplain management than is required by the Federal government. The District voluntarily participates in the CRS program which is available to communities by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The District's dedicated participation in the program beyond the standard requirements of NFIP's Floodplain Management means that Flood Hazard Area residents of the Unincorporated areas of the County have been qualified by FEMA for a reduction in their flood insurance premium. In 1994 we were awarded with a Class 8 CRS rating which translated into a 10% rate reduction for residents with property in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). Since then the Public Works Agency has continued to improve the community's CRS rating and on April 9, 1999, Insurance Services Office (ISO) approved our District for an additional 5% premium reduction, based on inspection and documentation done on February 10, 1999 by an ISO representative. This additional premium reduction for our flood district residents is a result of the hard work done by the Alameda County Flood Control staff, especially the floodplain management staff. The new premium reduction will be effective upon FEMA's final approval on October 1, 1999, and will result in a 15% reduction from the original flood insurance premium.
Additional information on this program is available in detail on the web site http://www.fema.gov/nfip. If you live in a special flood hazard area (SFHA), this discount should be automatically credited to you by your Flood Insurance Agent.
If you live in a SFHA and have no flood insurance, it would be advisable to purchase flood insurance as soon as possible. If you need to know the flood zone of your property, you can call us at (510) 670-5480 and provide us with an address and the Assessor's parcel number(APN) to obtain this information.
If you have any questions on the CRS program for the Unincorporated Area, please call (510) 670-5258.
